But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock me;they hurl insults, shaking their heads....
The 22 psalm is an amazingly detailed prophecy of the Christ's crucifixion. But I don't think anyone would have heard or read this in David's day and known it was a description of the Messiah. "But I am a worm and not a man" -- how could this ever be construed as the Christ, the Almighty Son of the Living God? It sounds more like a description of a victim rather than a victor. Who would have ever recognized this as pointing to the savior...unless God had specifically pointed it out to them? I don't fault the Jews for mistaking the Messiah as a military hero. It makes perfect sense given so many of the obvious prophecies about Him. I wonder what we're missing? What looking back will appear so obvious but now we think we have the answer but really don't? I think we probably have a number of mistaken notions about Judgement Day. We take literally so much that may very well be figurative. I think when it happens it will be a paradigm shift and we will look at the scriptures foretelling judgement's coming with new eyes and new understanding.
