Remember Abiathar, Joab and Shimei? Remember the problems they were for David? Remember David's long-suffering patience? I could never figure out why he let Joab get away with so much. Well, before he died, he let Solomon know that...his patience would die with him...wink, wink. So Solomon takes action.
Joab and Shimei are killed but Abiathar gets a pass on the death part because he once carried the ark. So carrying it improperly can kill you, but carrying it properly can save you from your sins...interesting.
These early moves help Solomon solidify his power. But, since they take place before Solomon is granted a "discerning heart," are they really a wise move as God marks something as wise? Just a thought.
Solomon could have asked God for anything and decided on a discerning heart. What would I have asked Him for? A discerning heart? Just a quick peek at His face? A look at the plans for my duplex in glory (I'm certainly not getting a mansion). The ability to write words that move people? Success for my children? Salvation for myself...for my famly...for everyone I know? Everybody gets into heaven no questions asked because Christ's sacrifice was sufficient? A timeless and legendary love shared between with my spouse, the stuff of plays and poetry? The winning lottery number (and, of course, giving most of it to a worthy cause)? A bigger church building? A more lively worship service? Direct word on the instrumental music question?
What really matters when you talk with God?
Lord knows.
