Redistribution of Population - Nehemiah 7:1-73, 11:1-36, 12:1-26
One of the things you get when you google "Thanksgiving." Says something about our idea of giving thanks. Seems like everything is about being entertained. I know it's a drug for me. I even read the Bible looking for what's entertaining. Lord knows.
Another genealogical record...it doesn't seem like the sort of stuff that should have made the Bible. Is it worthy of holy scripture? For the Jews, this book was a very practical record of their lives. Not just a mystical volume for us to toil over the mystery and the meaning.
I do find it fascinating that there are individuals who made the Bible, whose names show up for all time in scripture. And I wonder what they were like?
"Mattaniah, who together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving." Nehemiah 12:8
What a wonderful job this guy named Mattaniah had -- leading, finding, perhaps composing and teaching the songs of thanksgiving to God. To spend your time contemplating praise. How do you get that job? I'm sure it's not all we think it would be.
Lord knows.
