All I can say is David must have had pretty good eyes.
In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, "Put Uriah in the front lines where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die." 2 Sam. 11:14-15
First of all, David must have trusted Uriah enough to know Uriah wouldn't be dishonest and open the letter David sent to Joab. Ironic, since David is the one who can't be trusted. Uriah is carrying his own death sentence.
What did Joab think when Uriah showed back up at the front with a letter for him from David? I'm sure it didn't help to ease Joab's already violent nature. Joab must have thought David a hypocrite for criticizing him when he avenged his brother's death by killing Abner. Now David's committing a premeditated murder. Joab didn't need to be privy to David's actions. Lord knows.
