Transfer of Leadership to Joshua - Deuteronomy 31:1-8, 31:14-15, 31:23; A Song of Unfaithfulness - Deuteronomy 31:16-22, 31:24-30, 32:1-47

"...When they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods and worship them...." [Deut. 31:20]

This is our story.  We are blessed and we lose ourselves in the blessing and forget where the blessing comes from.  We turn blessing to a curse and need a God who can turn a curse into a blessing.

This is the story of our age and time.  We have been blessed for so long as a nation that we thought the blessing our due and our right.  And now some of is it gone.  Not all.  We are still so blessed.  And yet, we are fearful and confused like the armies that stood against Israel.  But there are signs, we are turning back to what is real.  Finding more in less.  Simplifying and doing without.  Discovering what really matters.  And praying.  But how long will the lesson last when we find ourselves so richly blessed again?  Will we remember?  Lord knows.

It is like a song - our drift from faith in God to faith in self and then forgiveness.  And is the refrain our faith or His forgiveness?

God writes the song, a song of warning and promise.  Imagine that - God has written us a song.  And it is amazing to me because a song requires an investment of self by the writer.  Songs are seldom lightly written.  It is an intimate act to write a song for someone.  I wish we had the tune and some instruction in how to sing it.  Or are we the melody that takes up the words and moves from low to high?

Moses performs the song for the people and ends with this poignant critique of the lyric:

"They [the words] are not just idle words for you - they are your life...." [Deut. 32:47]
