David had said, "Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command. 1 Chron. 11:6
Here's Joab again. So was David trying to find someone to take Joab's role? Was Joab trying to regain his standing with David after the Abner debacle? What's going on here? Why doesn't David just get rid of Joab after the Abner thing? Does he serve a purpose in David's regime...doing what needs to be done, the things David really wants done but isn't in a position to pursue? When others kill high-profile people that one suspects David is better without, they are rewarded by being killed. But not Joab. Why?
Solidifying his reign of Israel, David decides to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. Perhaps out of ignorance out of how to properly move it or out of haste, it's moved by cart and so Uzzah dies when he seeks to steady it. I imagine this put a damper on the party. All Israel was celebrating "with all their might" with "songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpet." 1 Chron. 13:8
It's not enough to celebrate and praise and party with all your might. God wants an obedient heart. David gets made at Uzzah's death, why? He's embarrassed that he'd been so hasty? That God called his righteousness into question?
Lord knows.
